Unbound Thoughts

Unbound Thoughts was inspired by Portrait of  Juan de Pareja, painted in 1650 by Diego Velázquez. Juan de Pareja, born into slavery, was portrayed through the gaze of the man who owned him. His image was documented, but his inner life remained unknown.

This contemporary reinterpretation imagines what could not be seen in the original work: thought, emotion, fear, hope, memory, and self-awareness. The circular inscriptions surrounding the subject represent internal dialogue concerns surrounding identity, mental health, purpose, pressure, love, regret, and transformation. Hidden within the work is Morse code, symbolizing private language and the freedom to possess one’s own thoughts.

The piece explores the contrast between external control and internal freedom. While the original portrait preserved the likeness of a man, this work attempts to restore his voice.

THE
POWER OF ONE

becoming fully human and finding our highest purpose through selflessness

The Power of One is a portrait series honoring individuals who embody selflessness through love, sacrifice, faith, and compassion. Each painting reflects the belief that one life can influence many and reminds us of our shared humanity.

This work is an invitation to step out of autopilot, to live with intention, and to recognize the power we each hold to make a meaningful difference.
